Our Review

MONTANA BURNING is a quick read and the first book in the MONTANA LOVERS series. Set in the late 1800s, it begins in Rhode Island and then continues in the Montana Territory. Adeline is traveling out west to help her sister, Florence, run a boardinghouse that Florence’s husband ran before he died. Florence has two young daughters that always seem to be up to something.

The boarders are interesting characters and we get to know all of them a little at a time.  Jake, who’s the marshal, and Adeline start off on the wrong foot. When they first meet, he is drunk. As their paths continue to cross, the sparks fly. The elderly women who board at the house provide comic relief, being on the eccentric side. The characters all have a depth to them and are rich in conflict and description.

Florence is sometimes too motherly to her sister. Jake and Adeline grow closer and share their pasts. Rain, the new cook, is a wonderful addition to the story. Her personal history is definitely heartbreaking. There are wonderful descriptions of the setting that made me feel like I was there. There is a happily ever after that was made better by the epilogue. I look forward to reading the next book in the series and hope that the characters from this book will be a part of it.

L.S. Young is a new-to-me author. I look forward to reading more of her books.
