Our Review

Snow is on the horizon and Christmas is near. Hope, grief, romance and incredible amounts of good cheer fill Maureen Child’s new novel, MAID UNDER THE MISTLETOE. A tetchy, attractive, affluent hermit is torn up from unspeakable tragedy after his wife and child were killed in an accident sometime ago. He secludes himself in a huge house in a fantastic forest in Idaho. No noise, no people and lots of room are just the ticket for Sam Henry to hammer out his mental demons, while he works on his latest diversion, hand-wrought wooden furniture. However, he is an incredibly talented painter but due to the tragic accident, he threw away his career. Will Sam ever surface from his self-imposed confinement?

A beautiful, determined young lady, Joy Curran, fills in for her friend Kaye, who is leaving on a Christmas vacation. However, Kaye is a maid at the mansion that houses the gruff goat on the hill, Sam Henry. Joy really needs the cash and a place to stay while her house is undergoing repair after being damaged by a fire. Joy and her daughter, Holly, spread love, happiness and optimistic dreams as they and Sam try to get along with each other in the weeks until Kaye’s return. Only little Holly with her child-like innocence melts the ice in Sam’s heart. Joy is secretly taken with Sam and inserts herself into his path, hoping to draw him out. Does Sam fall under Joy’s spell? Only time will tell. Will Holly weave some magic of her own in Sam’s company?

Heart wrenching despair, mingled amusement and hope-filled dreams combine into one neat romance-filled tale festively titled, MAID UNDER THE MISTLETOE. Ms. Child is super-talented at capturing the essence of tragic heartbreak and infusing generous portions of love and laughter. Simply sensational! I absolutely loved it! There are definitely some tender moments that will evoke some tears, so have Kleenex at the ready. MAID UNDER THE MISTLETOE is a delight from beginning to end! Just like a sweet, salty Payday candy bar with its surprise gooey center!
