Our Review

A QUILT FOR CHRISTMAS is a heartwarming tale that puts helping people front and center and enriches the lives of all who are involved. Vera is lonely in her new condo since she sold her home on the other side of the mountain after her husband died to be closer to her daughter and her family. But when her son-in-law’s job is transferred to another state, there’s not much she can do.

Vera is enlisted to help an ill neighbor when the woman’s four-year-old daughter comes knocking on her door. This starts a chain-reaction of strangers helping strangers and becoming friends. It’s touching to see how many people want to help as the story unfolds.

The friendships that are forged are unexpected because Fiona, the four-year-old, wants to make some of her mother’s dreams come true. We see the magic of the season and her outlook on life through a child’s eyes. The power of people coming together, no matter their background, to help make others lives better is a constant theme.

The story takes part in the weeks leading up to Christmas and drew me in from the first page. There are so many stories being told that are woven together through the Christmas quilt. I love the story’s closure, along with some unexpected happily-ever-afters and life-affirming changes.

Ms. Carlson is an author whose books I hope to read more of since this is only the third one I’ve read. If you like Christmas stories set in small towns with lots of family and friends, then this is a book you’d enjoy.
