Kyra Jacobs Interview

DragonsAmongThem_600x900

I am so glad you could join us here at Romance Junkies, Kyra. To start, will you please tell us a little bit about your current projects?

Hello, everyone! Wow, I’m so happy to be here! Release time has been a whirlwind of fun, and I’m thrilled to keep the party rolling.  So, a little about my current projects…

While not my debut novel, DRAGONS AMONG THEM is my first fantasy romance adventure and the first in the Kingdoms of Fire and Ice series. I’d planned it to be a trilogy, but I’m sure having a lot of fun writing about magic and dragon-shifters, so we’ll just have to see what happens once I finish writing book three. I’ve also got a series going over at Entangled BLISS (book 1, HER UNEXPECTED DETEOUR, released fall of 2015) which is contemporary sweet romance with a lot of heart and a terrific cast.

Who gave you the one piece of writing advice that sticks with you to this day?

I’ve received a ton of advice from so many wonderful writers, but the one that sticks with me most is from Shirley Jump. She used to lead a local writers group here in Indiana (which, ironically, I now lead as she’s relocated to sunny Florida) and recall her saying that we authors tend to be too nice to our characters. And while we hate to make life rough for them, “nice” can quickly lead to a boring read. Great fiction needs conflict, so turn their world upside-down and chase them up a tree. And while they’re up there, throw rocks at them—don’t give them the easy out. It took me a bit to grapple with that concept, but it’s so true. If your book lacks conflict, the pace will drag and your readers will get bored. So I try to keep a bucket of proverbial “rocks” on hand any time I start a new novel.

Describe the “perfect” hero. What about the “perfect” hero for you?

First, he absolutely can’t be perfect (especially in his own mind LOL). I like a hero with believable flaws who’s willing to work hard to win the woman he loves. He doesn’t have to be the alpha, just fiercely devoted to his family. Of course, an amazing kisser is a plus, too…

What are some of your favorite pastimes? Do you have any hobbies or collections?

When I’m not writing or taxiing kids to/from sports, I love to play in my flower gardens. It’s springtime in Indiana, so I’m pretty much in flower heaven right now. J

If your fairy godmother waved her wand and whisked you away to the location of your choice, which place would you choose, and why?

Oooo, nice. Hmm, I’m thinking somewhere in the UK. I’ve got British roots, and travelling across the pond is definitely on my bucket list. Of course, since there will be magic involved, she’d better also whisk me right into the arms of a handsome Brit with a sexy accent and intoxicating blue eyes. 😉

When it comes to food, are you the adventurous type who will try anything once, or do you prefer to stick to tried and true foods and recipes?

Ha! I love these questions. I grew up a horrrrrrribly picky eater, and while I’ve gotten more adventurous over the years, I tend to order my trusted favorites. And ice cream. Gotta have ice cream.

What is your favorite season? What do you love about it?

Fall. While I love springtime gardening, I love the colors of fall here in Indiana. It also means long sleeve/pant-weather and not having to worry about shorts and tan lines. LOL

What project are you working on next?

Book 2 in this series (DRAGONS AGAINST THEM) is done and book 3 (THE DRAGON WITHIN) is underway. I’ve also turned in book 2 of my Checkerberry Inn series (HER UNEXPECTED RETURN) and will be starting on the third in that series next (HER UNEXPECTED HELP). Once I come in from playing in the flowers, of course. 😉 After that, well, you’ll just have to stick around to see!

Thanks again for blogging with us!

Thank you so much for having me here today!

And don’t miss Kyra’s debut, Dragons Among Them
