Peg DeMarco, 58, is the author of two published novels, a screenplay looking for a producer, and a former newspaper columnist. As a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer in the early 1970's, Peg had a firsthand look at life in West Africa and has incorporated much of what she experienced in both her novels, "Kano," and "After the Twilight." She also wrote an article for an anthology published by the Peace Corps, which was submitted and chosen for a live reading at the Rotunda in Washington, D.C., during the Corps' twenty-fifth anniversary. The article was also published in World News.

Peg is the President of Mountain View Editing & Writing Services and also works full time for a real estate marketing firm. She resides in the foothills of North Carolina with her husband, Phil, their dogs and cat. Her children, David, Eddie and Vicki, are out on their own pursuing individual interests. When not working, you can usually find Peg in the garden tending to her roses and flower beds or mowing the lawn for exercise. Her family of groundhogs provides much enjoyment when they appear each spring waiting for her to feed them with treats from bushy greens to shelled peanuts.

A graceful doe crossed my path the other day. She turned once to look at me before she scampered off, a quick second in time, but a vision that stayed with me for the rest of the day. Why had this unremarkable incident made such an impression? To be honest, my day had begun with a slam of a car door, numerous errands to run, and no time to spare.

That's when I spotted the doe as my car made its way down the curvy mountain road. Slamming on the brakes, I took a swallow of water from my water bottle and sat for a few minutes after she had sprinted away. Suddenly, I was in no hurry to get to where I was going. The beauty of this gentle creature had calmed my spirit like a two-hour deep tissue massage.

For years, I've been traveling to faraway places, hopping on jets and snapping pictures that I tuck into a photo album. Maybe old age contentment is taking over, but lately the sight of a hungry groundhog and her four babies, popping their heads up from the edge of our mountaintop home around dusk to munch the carrots, lettuce and shelled peanuts thrown out for them, is unparalleled to those landmarks that I'll probably never get to see again.

Then again, perhaps I finally figured out that the next time I'm rushing around to get really nowhere, it might be wise to remember that doe crossing my path so that I can stop and once again pay tribute to the act.

My favorite books have to be the ones I use myself to write. My "Bible" is "The Romance Writer's Phrase Book" by Jean Kent & Candace Shelton. I have the 1984 edition, but it is super still. Roget's Thesaurus and any type of quote book rounds out my reading material. I just don't seem to have time to do any heavy reading. The first book I read as a teen and really loved was Jane Eyre. That may have inspired me to become a writer. While in Africa, without the luxury of television, I read all the time, mostly Agatha Christie mysteries.

My favorite time of year has to be right before Thanksgiving when everyone gets ready for the holiday season. For me, it signals a time to say thank you with a tray of cookies for those who do everyday things for me, like the ladies in the Bank of America in Morganton who always greet me with a smile, or the hard working people in the Morganton Post Office who get complaints and seldom thanks. It's a time when I personally get out my mailing labels and send a holiday letter to people I haven't spoken to all year. This is particular rewarding because it makes me take time to remember all the good times we shared over the years.
