Oscar Wilde’s classic The Picture of Dorian Gray has fascinated me ever since I first read it at the age of ten. Even at that young age I was able to pick up on the homo-erotic elements in the novel. While reading Wilde, I feel under Dorian’s spell right along with all the other characters. Since I’ve always been a great fan of the Gothic novel, this book pushed the right buttons for me, so it was probably inevitable that years later I decided to create something new out of this classic. However, I’ve penned a sequel rather than a reimagining or a rewritten version. Those who know my work are aware that I like to mix and blend genres and I’ve done that here. The Wilde Passions of Dorian Gray is erotic fiction, Gothic horror, Gothic romance, paranormal fiction, dark fantasy, and LGBT fiction all rolled into one!
The last time we saw Dorian Gray, he was already a very debauched fellow, and I ratcheted this up to extreme levels. Consider a man whose sole purpose in life is to experience new sensations, new thrills—it’s like a drug that you need more and more of in order to get that buzz. In Dorian’s case, he had pretty much experienced it all in Oscar Wilde’s work; therefore it was up to me to create scenarios that would provide him with the thrilling new sensations he craved, many of which are combined with sex and the element of danger. For Dorian sex is a tool—and he uses it in some highly imaginative and shocking ways. His passions are dark ones, and they get even darker as the novel progresses. Dorian lives for the corruption and destruction (both spiritually and physically) of others, yet to his surprise, he also discovers that he enjoys some of these very same things when reciprocated. By the time he arrives in modern-day New Orleans, you have to wonder what sensations are remaining for him to experience!
As it happens, his chance meeting with a group of vampirically inclined young men and women known as the Night People provide him with the ultimate of sensations. Yet through his association with them, Dorian discovers still another element to his nature—one that ends up being his greatest revelation of all.
THE WILDE PASSIONS OF DORIAN GRAY – a novel by Mitzi Szereto
Inspired by Oscar Wilde’s classic novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, Mitzi Szereto’s The Wilde Passions of Dorian Gray continues where Wilde left off, bringing Dorian Gray back from the dead in this Faustian tale of a man of eternal youth and great physical beauty who lives a life of corruption, decadence, and hedonism. The story begins in the bordellos of Jazz-Age Paris, moving to the opium dens of Marrakesh and the alluring anonymity of South America. In his pursuit of sensation and carnal thrills, Dorian’s desires turn increasingly extreme as he leaves behind yet more devastation and death. He ultimately settles in present-day New Orleans, joining forces with a group of like-minded beings known as the Night People. They inadvertently return to Dorian his humanity when he falls in love with a young woman he rescues from becoming their victim. Will she be his redemption? Or will she be his final curse?
