Please tell us a little bit about your current projects?
Thanks so much for having me to visit! Though traditionally published in the past (with Red Sage and Breathless Press), I’m currently enjoying an indie journey with the publication of my Gods of Love series of novellas. These novellas are designed as stand-alone reads, so the series can be read in any order, but they share a common theme of the erotes (Greek gods of desire) who offer their own brand of help to those modern-day mortals in need of sexual healing. The latest release is Immortal Seduction, which provides Aphrodite with the chance to experience mortal love for herself, rather than vicariously through her sons, the erotes.
When was the moment that you knew you had to be a writer?
I’ve always written, as far back as I can remember, but it wasn’t until I went through a difficult divorce in my late thirties that I realized I wanted to make a career out of writing rather than dabble as a hobby. I completely re-wrote Seducing Serena, an existing but unfinished work, and Red Sage Publishing bought it for their popular Secrets anthology series. It appeared in Volume 28 in 2009, and since then I’ve had several titles released. I still haven’t reached my goal of being able to write full-time, but I’m a lot closer to it now than I was when Seducing Serena came out.
Every writer dreams of getting “the call”. What were you doing when yours came? Who got to hear the good news first?
As I’m in Australia and my publisher in the US, my “call” was actually an email from the Senior Editor at Red Sage, and it came through at midnight, just as I was about to turn off my computer and go to bed. It was first thing in the morning for her!
I was home with only my two young daughters who were already fast asleep, and I remember dancing around the house like a crazy woman, trying to scream in a really quiet way so I wouldn’t wake the girls and making these weird choking noises instead! It was amazing and I will never forget that wonderful moment.
Who gave you the one piece of writing advice that sticks with you to this day?
My sister went to a work conference where she heard that the only difference between an unpublished and a published author is that the latter never gave up. They were talking about academic theses, not romantic fiction, but it still resonated and was the one piece of advice that really made me stick at it. Even now, when I reach any difficult part of the story (and there is always one of those, believe me!) I remember that advice, grit my teeth, and keep going.
Describe the “perfect” hero. What about the “perfect” hero for you?
My perfect hero isn’t about good looks or a particular age or profession. It is about someone with strong sexual charisma, who has a real connection to others – a connection both physical and emotional. Lust without an emotional connection is a turn-off. Lust and love together – yes, that’s what really turns me on! The perfect hero also needs to make the heroine feel good about herself; someone who puts her first. In real life I also look for someone who can make me laugh.
What are some of your favorite pastimes? Do you have any hobbies or collections?
I’m a mother of two teenagers still at school, one of whom has had a huge struggle with depression this past year. I also have a day job, and a new husband of one year, so spare time is quite scarce at the moment. Any spare time I do get would usually be spent either writing, reading, or surfing the net.
What has been your biggest adventure to date?
Hmm, quite a few things could fit the bill here. Having children, life as a divorced single parent (not an adventure I would choose, and not for the faint-hearted), getting married for the second time…so many events. I think that second only to having my I am most proud of is undertaking to self-publish my Gods of Love series of children, the thing books. A grand adventure, more work than I ever realized, and a huge learning curve, with enormous peaks and troughs along the way.
If your fairy godmother waved her wand and whisked you away to the location of your choice, which place would you choose, and why?
Right now I’m imagining a tropical island setting (Bora Bora maybe, or the Maldives). There would be a gorgeous sunset, a bottle of brut champagne and a massage tent set up on the beach just waiting for my partner and I to lay down and have the stress knots in our muscles dissolved by gentle hands.
When it comes to food, are you the adventurous type who will try anything once, or do you prefer to stick to tried and true foods and recipes?
I’m definitely the adventurous type when it comes to food. I’m willing to try almost anything once, though I can’t guarantee I’ll like it! My sister and I always talk about going on The Amazing Race, and we’ve decided that if we ever do, she’s the one that’ll have to do the bungee jumps (no WAY will I do that) and I can eat the crazy stuff.
What is the one modern convenience that you cannot do without?
Definitely my mobile phone. My daughter accidentally dropped mine a couple of weeks back, and being without it for a few days was like torture. Stupid, I know, because only a few years ago I didn’t even have one at all, but I guess it is what you get used to, isn’t it?
How do you describe yourself? How would your family and friends describe you?
I’d describe myself as someone who values family above all else. Also stubborn, determined, and a perfectionist. And a bit – well, ok, a lot – neurotic! I asked my family how they describe me and they said smart, kind, incredibly hard-working, and generous. Aw, aren’t they sweet?! Now they’ll get a nice dinner tonight!
What is your favorite season? What do you love about it?
Autumn (fall). Summer in Australia is disgustingly hot and winter is far too grey and full of colds and flu. Autumn to me is about delightful colors outside, warm sunny days, cool evenings and the chance to occasionally light the wood burner in our living room. Love love love autumn. Spring is my second favorite season J
And lastly, no interview of a writer would be complete without this question: what is your favorite comfort food?
Cheese and crackers, salt & vinegar potato crisps, tuna and olive dips, hmm, pretty much anything savory and “nibbly”. I could happily live on nibbles.
