Interview with Author DN SIMMONS
I am so glad you could join us here at RomanceJunkies. To start, will you please tell us a little bit about your current projects?
My current project is going to be in the horror genre and I’m thinking it’s going to be a series. I like to stay a little secretive about my new projects until I’m close to finalizing it but all I will say for now is that you can expect to see more dead people. ![]()
Q: When was the moment that you knew you had to be a writer?
I believe I knew I wanted to be a writer when I was eleven years old. I’d written a lot of short horror stories that I would read to my classroom at the end of the day. They all enjoyed the tales and throughout my youth, my teachers encouraged me to pursue my dreams. A few years later, I decided to do just that.
Q: Who gave you the one piece of writing advice that sticks with you to this day?
I have to say that it was Jim Butcher who said to write about what interest you and make sure you do your research.
Q:Describe the “perfect” hero. What about the “perfect” hero for you?
I like my heroes a little dark. Heroes who can walk the fine line between good and evil are so much more interesting than those who try to be “good” all of the time. If you think about it, the heroes more like “Superman” so to speak, are some of the most hypocritical and judgmental heroes opposed to those more like “Batman” or “Wolverine”. I love heroes who don’t mind getting their hands dirty.
Q: What are some of your favorite pastimes?
Do you have any hobbies or collections? I love watching television shows like Supernatural, Dexter, Walking Dead, etc. I guess you can say I enjoy shows with dark heroes. I love reading, of course, dancing, art and playing classical music on my piano. I don’t really have any collections other than my DVD collection if that counts.
Q: What has been your biggest adventure to date?
Well, recently I attended a Prince concert which was a huge thrill for me because I really enjoy his music.
Q: If your fairy godmother waved her wand and whisked you away to the location of your choice, which place would you choose, and why?
Oh wow, you mean I wouldn’t have to fly!? There would be so many places I’d love to go. Let me try to narrow it down to just one. Japan. I’d love to go to Japan, I really enjoy learning about Japanese culture and from what I’ve seen in pictures, movies and anime, I think the country is quite beautiful.
When it comes to food, are you the adventurous type who will try anything once, or do you prefer to stick to tried and true foods and recipes? I’m the adventurous type that will try almost anything once. LOL. I recently ate eel in a Sushi roll this past holiday season and it was interesting to say the least.
Q: What is the one modern convenience that you cannot do without?
My computer.
Q: What is this romance writer’s idea of the “ideal romantic evening”?
A great dinner, movie, fire by the fireplace and a warm snuggle. Well… possibly a little bit more than a “snuggle”.
Q: How do you describe yourself?
Straightforward, fair, dependable, responsible, intelligent and witty.
Q: How would your family and friends describe you?
Probably the same way.
Q: What is your favorite season?
What do you love about it? Summer is my favorite because when you live in the city of Chicago, there’s so many things you can enjoy during that season. Outdoor food and music festivals, swimming, bar-b-ques, etc.
Q: And lastly, no interview of a writer would be complete without this question: what is your favorite comfort food?
Seafood. Just give me a lobster and crab legs and I’ll pick right on up. LOL

D.N. Simmons Bio:I was born in the little, but big bustling city of Chicago, Illinois. I still live there today and I’m loving every second of it … Except for those harsh cold winters. I started writing short horror stories when I was eleven years old. It wasn’t until 2004 that I decided to take the plunge into the professional literary world when I wrote Desires Unleashed.
I love the supernatural world; I’ve always found it fascinating, especially vampires and shape-shifters. It was my love of the genre that motivated me to create the story I had always wanted to read. I published it, hoping there were other people out there who would be entertained by that same story. I love to entertain people, to offer them that fantasy world they can escape into filled with wonders and good times. I know I appreciate the escapism I’ve delved into when reading a good book.
Some of the accolades I’ve won for my writing are: “New Voice of Today” by A Romance Review, “Rising Star” by Love Romance and “Author of the Month” by Warrior of Words. I’ve been nominated two years in a row in several categories, including “best vampire novel” and “best urban-fantasy” at Love Romance and More. My third novel; The Royal Flush did win honorable mention in 2006.
