About the Nashville Nights / Next Generation Series by Author Cheryl Douglas
Q: Can you tell us a bit about the Nashville Nights series?
Nashville Nights is an eight-book contemporary romance series involving some major players in country music. Four of the main characters are singers, one is a manager, who started his own record label, and another is a publicist.
Q: Can you tell us about the Next Generation series?
Nashville Nights, the Next Generation, is an eight book spin-off series featuring the adult children of the characters readers grew to love in the Nashville Nights series. By the time book five in the Nashville Nights series was released, readers began telling me they didn’t want the series to end, so I added two more books. From there, I realized I wasn’t ready to let go of this series either, so the idea of the Next Generation was born. My wonderful Facebook fans jumped on board with the idea of a spin-off series right away, and I couldn’t wait to get started.
Q: What inspired you to write Nashville Nights?
I started out with the idea to write a story about Trey and Sierra, the hero and heroine in book one, Shameless. But when the secondary characters became more prominent, I realized I had to dig a little deeper to learn more about them. I never expected this to evolve into sixteen books, but I’ve learned to listen to my muse and follow it wherever it might lead.
Q: Who was your favorite character?
If I had to pick just one, I’d have to say it was Trey Turner from book one. His story had been bouncing around in my head for years, and all of the other characters were born as a result of my need to tell his story. He was troubled, a broken man trying to deal with tragedy and overcome his long-time battle with alcoholism. Just when I thought I had a handle on him, the story would take a surprising turn and I would realize there was yet another layer to his character. Trey made his fair share of mistakes, and he had a long road to find redemption, but I loved every second of his journey.
Q: How will the books in this series be released?
All eight books in the Nashville Nights series have been released. The first book in the Next Generation series will be released October 2012 and the last book will be released summer of 2013.
Q: What surprised you the most about this series?
This series took on a life of its own, literally. As I said, Shameless was supposed to be a stand-alone book. I never expected this to be such a long and rewarding journey, but I’m so glad I decided to see it through to the end. I’m getting ready to start the eleventh book now, and I’m as excited about that as I was about book one, so I know I made the right decision when I chose to write the spin-off series. There were definitely more stories waiting to be told about this close-knit group of family and friends.
Q: What was the most difficult scene or character to write?
There were a lot of difficult, heart-wrenching scenes in this series, but I would say the most difficult book to write was book six, Heartless. It deals with a very sensitive topic, but I’m glad I chose to tackle it because I think it allowed all of the characters to grow, not just the book’s hero and heroine, Derek and Ashley.
Q: Why did you choose country music as the common thread that ties these books together?
Country music is the backdrop, but I wouldn’t say it’s a strong focus in the series. I hope this is a series that readers will enjoy regardless of the genre of music they prefer. Having said that, country music tells a story. It’s often about heartbreak, trials, lost love, patriotism, and triumph. This series also encompasses all of those elements, so for me, it made sense to weave the music I love into this series. I hope readers share my opinion.
Q: How can readers find your books?
All books in this series are available at Amazon, and are slowly being released to Barnes and Noble, Sony, iTunes, and All Romance eBooks over the coming months. I hope all of the books will be available at these retail outlets by the end of the year.
