Valerie, The covers of your novels are beautiful! I know that you don’t create them, but nice choices! Have you always lived in Arizona (my absolute choice for retirement)? Are your earlier books also in the paranormal genre?

Hi, Joanne,
The gods-of-all-bookcovers have definitely smiled on me! As for living in Arizona, I’ve been here for 21 years having come from California. I live in the Phoenix area but personally I think Sedona would be a fabulous place to retire…all the red rocks, so beautiful. Two of my warriors have permanent homes in Sedona…of course!
My earlier books were for the most part NOT paranormal, but were historical and set in England in the early 1800s. HOWEVER, I did write one vampire novella as part of my Regency work, as well as three novels that included characters from Greek mythology.
Blessings,
Caris

Hi Valerie,
You already know I bought your first book because of the cover. All the others have been beautiful too. I would like to know who your favorite author is? Is Endell emodeled after anyone you know? I love your books and can not wait until the next one.

Hi, Sherrie,
I had a fan tell me recently that when she first bought ASCENSION, she thought it was about angels because of the covers! What a shock she had, but since she followed it up with how much she enjoyed the book, I didn’t feel too bad! Anyway, I have a lot of favorite authors, but one that I seem to turn to a lot lately is Laurell K. Hamilton. I really like how vivid her writing is. I always feel like I’m right in the middle of her story and I HOPE that my writing approaches that experience…at least it’s definitely my goal. Of course, Laurell’s books are totally different from mine in that my Guardians of Ascension novels are completely focused on the romance and Laurell’s aren’t.
As for my beloved Endelle–the profane, no-filter woman who rules Second Earth–it’s probably a good thing that I can tell you that she’s NOT modeled after anyone I know…wouldn’t you agree? That would be someone I’d probably run from, at least on first encounter. The great thing about Endelle is her heart. She loves the warriors under her command and would die for them, even if it doesn’t look like it on the surface. So I always try to include a scene in which we get to see her compassionate side, rare as it is, at least in terms of outward expression!
So glad you’re along for the ride! BORN OF ASHES, January 3rd! Can’t wait for you to read Warrior Jean-Pierre’s story!
Blessings,
Caris

Hi Valerie,
Love the covers!
Are you a dog or a cat person? And if you could go on a date with one of your heroes, which one would you pick and why?
October 5th, 2011 at 8:00 pm
Hi, Mariee,
All my life I’ve had both dogs and cats, though mostly cats. My two wonderful cocker spaniels died a few years ago, and they were with me for 12 and 16 years respectively. I miss them terribly, but I haven’t gotten new dogs yet. I’m way too busy. But sometimes when I see a dog, especially a cocker, the longings get tough. As for cats, I have two at the moment; Gizzy and Sebastien. So, I don’t love one specie over the other…cats are just easier to maintain!
As for dating one of my heroes, I once told an interviewer who asked which warrior ‘she’ should go out with, that she should date ALL of them, one after the other. Of course we both fainted at the thought of it since these men are outrageously hunky. So, that’s kind of my answer. I could never choose. When I’m writing the hero of the current novel, I’m so with him, and no one has been so wonderful before or could be after him, that he would be the obvious choice. Then I have the same experience with my next leading man and so it goes.
Wow, I didn’t give you a straight yes or no for either of your questions! Probably some kind of record.
Hope you enjoy my Guardians of Ascension!
A mountain of blessings,
Caris

Hi Valarie, I have to be honest and say I am not familiar with any of your books, But they all look very interesting..
Where did you come up with your “author” names?Caris is a beautiful name and it is the second name of one of my great+ nieces, She is Isabella Caris.
What are some of your hobbies when not writing?
October 5th, 2011 at 8:30 pm
Hi, Kathleen,
You’ve expressed the exact reason why we authors put ourselves out there–to hopefully make some new connections and introduce our work to people just like you!
Just so ya know, I kind of goofed with Romance Junkies. I didn’t know how the speed-date thing worked and now I know I should have sent them a nice summary of my books to post at the beginning. I’ll do better next time.
Right now you’re probably in the dark about my series, so I’ll tell you a little bit about it…I wanted to create a series based on vampire mythology but set in a really big world, so I concocted a series of ‘ascending’ dimensions in which a mortal, like you, could ‘ascend’ to second earth and become a vampire. (I mean, isn’t that what you’ve always wanted…LOL!) But in the process of working with ‘vampires’, I was writing a scene, and this really bad vampire was just hanging in the air, floating in a gentle twirl and bearing these beautiful, enormous, black, glossy wings! I was hooked from that moment. Wings? Vampires with wings? There’s a slight nod to wings in our earth-based mythologies in which vampires turn into bats, which have wings…but that’s kind of a stretch. Anyway, that’s how the concept got started. My Guardians of Ascension series, is also set in a world at war in which another really bad vampire, by the name of Commander Greaves, wants to take over and enslave not just Second Earth but Mortal Earth as well. Add a band of super-sexy warriors, with huge wings, battling in the air, in black leather kilts and weapons harnesses and that’s pretty much my series! Oh, but there’s one more thing–all the women are really powerful so they give these hunky men a run for their money!
I love the name ‘Caris’…it is beautiful, isn’t it? And Isabella Caris is rather perfect, I have to say! As for why I chose that name, I felt I needed the paranormal series to be very separate from all my previous Regency work. I also wanted a Celtic name. So, I started hunting through the web on Scottish, Irish, and Celtic name sites, and found Caris. I really loved it right away. ‘Roane’ is also Celtic. The names just sounded right together.
When I’m not writing, I’m sooo ridiculously hooked on HGTV, especially any show that does a renovation, like Property Brothers. My all-time fav is when Sarah Richardson does ‘Sarah’s House’ (I think that’s what it’s called, when she does a renovation of an entire house…just awesome!) My suspicion about why I like these shows is that they’re very visual…no stories are created and I can just let my mind ‘relax’ and ‘watch’ instead of ‘ponder’ and ‘create’. That’s my theory anyway!
Hope my series strikes a chord with you, but I know my work isn’t for everyone. As a means of warning, my books are a bit profane, very sexy, and occasionally violent…if that helps!
An ocean of blessings,
Caris

How long did it take you to get your first manuscript accepted and how did you react when you got the call?
What do you think you would be doing if you hadn’t become an author?

Hey there! Someone in my Facebook group shared this site with us so I came to look it over. I’m definitely enjoying the information. I’m book-marking and will be tweeting this to my followers! Exceptional blog and outstanding design and style.

Hi Caris,
I am not familiar with your series but it looks good. Are all the characters vampires or are there other paranormal characters involved too?
Do you still write Regencies too?
October 19th, 2011 at 6:02 am
I have read all the books in this series. Can’t wait for the next one. How many books do you see for this series? Personally I hope there will be several. Will Endelle get her own warrior and a happy ever after?

Gorgeous covers! I assume the titles come before the covers, are they yours? Have you always gotten covers that you love? If not, was there something you could do about it? or have the cover gods always been nice to you?

I don’t have a question, just want to say I look forward in continuing this series.
Thanks,
