Susan
Vaughan stopped by RJ after hours
I
had a great time this summer at the Romance Writers of America
Conference in Washington, D.C. One major factor was gabbing with
friends, old and new. Um, make that "networking." Some
of the time our "networking" was over drinks. Deb Noone,
Joyce Lamb, and some other friends went out to dinner the first
night in D.C. After we ordered our meals, Deb told Joyce she just
had to read my new book, Primal Obsession. Deb and I clicked our
margarita glasses together.

Joyce, a
Berkley author, and I hadn't seen each other in a while, so
she wanted to know all. "Cool title, Susan," she said
as she sipped her rum and coke. "Primal Obsession. Romantic
suspense, of course. What does the title mean?"
"Glad you like my title. Primal because the story takes
place in the wilderness, in northern Maine on a canoe and camping
trip. All of the main characters have an obsession. The Maine
Guide hero Sam is a former pro baseball player with an injured
hand. He's obsessed with proving he can be a success at something.
The investigative reporter heroine Annie is obsessed with identifying
the killer, dubbed the Hunter, who murdered her friend and several
other women."

|
"Ooh,
and the killer's obsession is next." Deb elbowed Joyce. "This
guy is sooo clever and creepy. I had to have all the lights on
in my house when I read the ending."
Joyce set down her drink and leaned forward. "Yeah, yeah,
the killer? Go on."
"You
bet." I said. "The Hunter is obsessed with doing what
his name implies, hunting his victims. Annie's reporting has led
the police too close to him, so now he's obsessed with revenge."
|
"Love
it," said Joyce, also an author of romantic suspense. "It
sounds full of conflict and tension. I may be afraid to ever
go into the woods if I read this story. Just kidding. Tell me
about the romance part of the story. Is Annie blown away by
this hunky jock hero?"
I waggled my head as I pictured Sam. "Well, she knows he's
sexy right away, but a bad experience with another pro athlete
has made Annie consider jocks self-centered and arrogant jerks.
She rebuffs Sam's flirting and teasing at first but he's hard
to ignore for long. Sam wants Annie but has too many self doubts
to think they could ever hook up."

|
"So
how do they get together?"
"That's where the killer comes in. Nothing like danger to
bring out people's strengths." I laughed. "I won't reveal
how that works out, even if you buy me another margarita."
"No problem. I'm hooked. But let's order another drink anyway."

Reporter
Annie Wylde and Mother Nature are lifelong enemies, but
she signs up for a Maine canoe trip to honor a promise
to her friend who was murdered by a serial killer dubbed
the Hunter. When she meets the wilderness guide, former
Major Leaguer Sam Kincaid, a look from him makes her toes
curl, but she wants nothing to do with an ex-jock like
her former lover. Sam finds Annie a sexy challenge but
believes he's a failure and they're too different. He
needs to prove he can succeed at something, even with
a bum hand. When the Hunter stalks the group, Sam and
Annie must borrow from each other's strengths to defeat
him.
